Otto Bruyns Public Library is proud to welcome acclaimed poet Faleeha Hassan.
In 1991, Hassan became the first woman in her home city of Najaf, in Iraq, to publish a book of poetry, titled Because I Am a Girl.
Hassan went on to publish 15 more books of poetry, several plays, two novels and dozens of short stories.
In 2011, her name landed on a militant group's death list. She fled to Turkey with her two youngest children. In August 2012, they moved to New Jersey. There, Hassan taught herself English online, and she has been writing prolifically in her adopted language ever since.
Over the next few weeks and months I will be adding Climate Change to the topics of issues discussed here on The Light.
On Friday September 6th I attended a conference on climate change which helped me to understand 2 major things.
1. Climate Change is increasing a NOW problem as well as a FUTURE problem.
2. Climate Change is more than ever becoming a NOW problem for people of color and minorities. In the effort to "fix the planet", it is too easy to demand people of color and the poor to bear more than their share of the sacrifice involved.
Here we speak to director of Environment Justice for The Ironbound Community Corporation, Ms. Maria Lopez-Nunez.
