Please remember our annual toy drive.

In the years since our toy drive started...it has become harder to get donations and the request for donations have increased. 

So if you can spare a few dollars for a new toy? It will greatly help.

We have donated toys to every organization that has asked.

The Festive Fest ...OPEN CALL FOR VISUAL ARTISTS

The Light Nation is in the middle of our Holiday Drive Event Season.
We have several events scheduled between AC and Philly!

We are now putting out an open call for artists to be a part of our Festive Fest Show on December 16th at The Bourre Atlantic City!

You can submit a visual art piece as large as 18 x 24 inches.
We will only accept as many as 10 artists total. No more than $10 pieces will be on display.
Although this show is at a establishment with a bar, please no nudity for this show.
Art must be submitted for consideration before hand.

Along with your name.
The name of the art work.
The size of the artwork.
One paragraph intro/bio no more than 200 words.

If selected you will be required to pay a $20 entry fee.
You will be entered into the show and there will be 3 Cash Prizes given out for the best art.
The Open Prize-Attendees will vote on their favorite piece.
The VIP Award-A panel of noted people from the arts will select a winner for this award.
The Festive Fest Award-We have a special special panel that will select the winner of this award.

There is no special theme.
Please nothing hyper sexual.
Please nothing hyper political.

We will be curating other shows in the future for political and controversial content.

The deadline is December 1st. All artists will be notified as to the status of heir submission by December 5th.

Calling On Area DJs and Artists To Help Fight Hunger and Homelessness

Every Hanukah/Christmas/Kwanzaa Holiday Season, we here at The Light Nation organize a Holiday Drive to help people in Atlantic City, Philadelphia and the communities in between.

This year we have several events that we hope will draw out record breaking support to help some very good people.


The newest Holiday tradition we would like to start is called
The Hip Hop Holiday: DJs and Artists Against Hunger!

The good people of Ventnor Coffee have offered us a space to come and celebrate the holiday season with area DJs. 

We are going to be asking the best DJs to come through and spin.
People attending are asked to bring in donations of cash, canned goods for the food bank and new gloves, socks and or hats for The Covenant House. Generally we collect new toys as well...any toys brought that day will go directly to Toys For Tots through Ventnor Coffee. We will collect new toys at other events!


Also at this event The Light is sponsoring a Hip Hop Holiday art contest with a cash prize to the winner!


For DJs that do not get a chance to play at this event, we ask that you attend and get in on some great board games and card games.


We are determined to make this holiday season festive and happy for all.


Suggested donation for this event is $10. However, no one will be turned away. We sincerely request that you do come ready to support Ventnor Coffee by buying desserts and beverages.


We will be announcing raffle/auction gifts as we move closer to the event.

Poetry Nation: Faleeha Hassan

Otto Bruyns Public Library is proud to welcome acclaimed poet Faleeha Hassan.

In 1991, Hassan became the first woman in her home city of Najaf, in Iraq, to publish a book of poetry, titled Because I Am a Girl.

Hassan went on to publish 15 more books of poetry, several plays, two novels and dozens of short stories.

In 2011, her name landed on a militant group's death list. She fled to Turkey with her two youngest children. In August 2012, they moved to New Jersey. There, Hassan taught herself English online, and she has been writing prolifically in her adopted language ever since.

Environmental Justice and Climate Change

Over the next few weeks and months I will be adding Climate Change to the topics of issues discussed here on The Light.

On Friday September 6th I attended a conference on climate change which helped me to understand 2 major things.

1. Climate Change is increasing a NOW problem as well as a FUTURE problem.

2. Climate Change is more than ever becoming a NOW problem for people of color and minorities.
In the effort to "fix the planet", it is too easy to demand people of color and the poor to bear more than their share of the sacrifice involved.
